Ardbeg Hypernova Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Ardberg’s Hypernova is the peatiest, smokiest malt ever made by the distillery. But just how peaty is the peatiest? Maybe this info will shed some light on the situation - the maltsters on the Isle of Islay couldn’t achieve the ridiculous numbers that were required for this expression, which is 170 ppm, meaning parts per million, standing for phenol count in barley or, better said, the amount of peat smoke in the malt. Only because it was impossible to smoke the peat on the island, Ardberg Hypernova was smoked with non-Islay peat (shipping the peat from Islay to the masters on the mainland would be pretty non-environmental). This limited edition peat bomb was originally released to members of the Ardbeg Committee only. Bottled at a powerful ABV of 51%, you would expect this explosion of a whisky to blow you away with its smoke, but it instead opens new horizons of intensity, flavor, and complexity with each sip.

Tasting Notes
Hypernova starts smoky on the nose, the aromas of salt, seaweed, seashells, tobacco, ash, pepper, a touch of citrus, and grass follow after. On the palate, there is smoke, but it is not too overwhelming: the notes of charcoal, sea salt, lemon, young oak, and creaminess make this a well-rounded whisky.
