Now owned by a Scotch multinational colossus Diageo, its humble beginnings started in 1819, when a 14-year-old Johnnie opened a grocery in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, and started blended whiskies from local spirits. The business was passed from father to son for several generations, each chipping in their own way. The most notable contributions were the introduction of the square bottle design and the slanting label in the 1860s. The introduction of the ‘striding man’ figure—drawn in 1908 by cartoonist Tom Browne—played a vital part in making the brand visible.
