Nikka has decided to spice things up a little. While waiting for their age statement stock to be replenished and their finest expressions to be released, they decided to showcase all of the experiments the distillery has made over the years. In the 2021 Mikka Discovery series, they presented two well-known single malts, Miyagikyo and Yoichi, in a different expression than usual. The main theme of the 2021 Mikka Discovery series is peat switcheroo. The traditionally bold and intense Yoichi has suddenly found itself with no peat; and the typically gentle, floral, and delicate Miyagikyo was released in a peated version. So the Miyagikyo Discovery series is a bold, edgy Whiskey, very smoke-forward and intense.

Tasting Notes

The nose starts off strongly with aromas of smoke that are balanced by vanilla cream and buttered toast. On the palate, ash, buttered popcorn, grilled pineapples, peaches, and herbs. The finish is herby and develops into pleasant rich creaminess. A little rough around the edges, this youngster offers some interesting flavors and great complexity.
